FR Food: Sweet and Salties

With 4th of July just around the corner and all the summer picnics now in full swing, I thought I'd share a recipe guaranteed to bring fireworks to any gathering (see what I did there?)!  Sweet and Salties are true to their name -- they're a cookie/brittle combo that tastes like heaven with its caramel-y sweetness and sea saltiness.  I've seen similar recipes in cookbooks and online that refer to this recipe as "Sweet and Saltines" or just simply "Crack" (probably the most accurate description, IMHO).  

Anyway, it's super easy and would be a great addition to any summer picnic, Christmas cookie exchange or dessert bar.  I've also made them for housewarming parties and hostess gifts.  They're delish and easy to package festively for gift-giving.  Give them a try and be prepared for plenty of compliments and recipe requests!

Sweet and Salties

Makes: 20 servings

Ingredients:
  • 40 Saltine Crackers
  • 2 Sticks Butter
  • 1 Cup Light Brown Sugar
  • 8 Oz. Semisweet Chocolate Chips
  • Sea Salt for Sprinkling

Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 425. Line a 15x10x1-inch pan with aluminum foil and saltine crackers.
  2. In medium saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar and bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat and pour evenly over crackers.
  3. Bake 2-4 minutes until just bubbly, watching closely to avoid burning. Remove from oven and pour chocolate chips over the crackers. When chips melt a bit, use a spatula to spread them evenly over crackers. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  4. Transfer to fridge until completely cold. Break into pieces and store in airtight container in the fridge.
